This solitary and majestic Gothic church rises at the outer northern part of Cannaregio district, overlooking the suggestive namesake square- parvis, which pavement is still the fish bone old one.

Built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 15th century, the church was dedicated to San Cristoforo, but people started soon to call it Church of Madonna dell'Orto after the finding in a nearby vegetable garden of a statue of the Holy Mary, made by Giovanni De Santi, believed to be miraculous. On the magnificent façade there is a Gothic-Renaissance gate, proof of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic and from Gothic to Renaissance style. Beside the church, there was once the Merchants’ School.
The interior with three naves and great brightness treasures extraordinary valuable artworks, in particular some paintings by Tintoretto, whose house was just nearby, and whose burial is in the first right chapel of this church.
Among the most important works, the ones in the Contarini Chapel, with Sant'Agnese by Tintoretto and the altarpiece of the 15th century with San Giovanni Battista e santi by Cima da Conegliano (1493), the fine Renaissance style Valier Chapel, in which there are a little painting by Giovanni Bellini Madonna col Bambino (1480), stolen in 1993.
