This elegant church, built between 1497 and 1504 is the last work of the great Renaissance architect Mauro Codussi (1497-1504). It has a Greek cross plan and a dome on four big arches supported by pillars.
The church was built in 1080 and named after Saint Cecilia. It was completely rebuilt between 1485 and 1494 by the architect Mauro Codussi and ended by the son Domenico. It was then dedicated to St. John because of the precious remains of the famous Patriarch that are hosted in there and were brought from the Orient to be venerated here.
The design and the painting setup make this church one of the most important church of the Venetian Renaissance: sure enough on the first chapel on the right, there is the painting with San Girolamo, San Cristoforo e Sant'Agostino, masterpiece by Giovanni Bellini (1513), while on the main altar is the altarpiece with San Giovanni Crisostomo e i santi San Giovanni Battista, Liberale, Maria Maddalena, Agnese e Caterina, painted between 1509 and 1511 by Sebastiano del Piombo, just before he left Venice to Rome.
