The church, originally connected to Saint Mark and designed by Gambello, was built during the 15th century with Gothic style and then completed by Mauro Codussi (1483-90), who added a typically Renaissance style white stone façade.

Its interior with three naves on columns mixed Gothic elements to new Renaissance shapes in big solemnity spaces. Alongside the nave walls are treasures some important canvas from the 17th and 18th century, such as the most important Madonna in trono e santi, famous altarpiece by Giovanni Bellini (1505). In the apse of the Chapel of S. Tarasio there are some important frescos by Andrea del Castagno and by Francesco da Faenza (1442), besides three Gothic polyptych by Antonio Vivarini and Giovanni d'Alemagna (1443).
