A visit to the church of Sant'alvise and to the nearby church of Madonna dell'Orto offers a precious occasion to explore the most authentic and secret part of Venice, represented by Cannaregio district
This evocative church keeps the original Gothic facade and its bell tower of the 14th century on the back

Originally a convent church, Sant'Alvise was, according to tradition, commissioned to celebrate the bishop of Toulouse by the Venetian noblewoman Antonia Venier after she saw him in a dream.
Its interior, refurbished in the 17th century has one nave only, crossed by the old 15th century “barco”, the fist example of suspended women choir, that was linked to the cloister.
The ceiling is amazing, completely frescoed by Pietro Antonio Torri and Pietro Ricchi during the 17th century. In its interior, besides important paintings attributed to Veronese’s scholars and some small tempera wooden boards with Storie dell'Antico testamento attributed to Lazzaro Bastiani (15th century), there are some canvas by Tiepolo, telling The Passion of the Christ, among them one of his masterpiece la Salita di Cristo al Calvario.
