The Glass Museum in Murano was founded after the fall of the Venetian Republic (1797) and long years of foreign domination. In 1861, after Venice overcame the blackest period of Murano glass, Antonio Colleoni (1811-1855), who was the mayor of the island, and the abbot Vincenzo Zanetti (1824-1883), lover of the art of glass, succeed in having the Municipality approve a project of an archive gathering documents regarding the history of Murano.
Soon the museum got the better of the archive, because of the many donations of the glass produced in the previous centuries and of contemporary glass from glass factory’s owners, who starting from the second half of the XIX century restart to work hard.
In 1862, Vincenzo Zanetti established a school, annexed to the Museum, which was attended by the glass blowers during the weekend, who besides drowing, studied also the glass models blowed in the past and stored in the Museum.
In 1923, after Murano was joint to Venice Municipality, the Glass Museum became a part of Musei Civici Veneziani (the Venetian public museums). Its collection were therefore enriched by adding glasses from the Correr, Cicogna and Molin collections, which include, by the way, the most beautiful Renaissance glass of the Museum.
Afterwards, the storages of the Archeological Authority allowed to establish an archeological section, whose most prestigious objects are the glasses from the necropolis in Enona (Zara).
Still today the collections in the Museum are enriched by donations from glass factory’s owners, enriching above all the contemporary collection.
