The Museum of the 20th century European and American art includes the personal collection of the 20th century of Peggy Guggenheim. It is located in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an unfinished building on the Grand Canal. For 30 years it has been the home of the American heiress.
The museum, linked to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York was inaugurated in 1980 in the 18th century Venetian palace bought in 1949 by the American Peggy Guggenheim.
It was exactly Peggy Guggenheim the one who arranged her collection of contemporary art in the palace.
The collection includes paintings and sculptures of the main artistic trends and avant-garde of the XX century.Among the artists, works by Gino Severini, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian (The Sea, 1915-1916), Paul Klee (Magic Garden, 1924), Max Ernst (The Robing of the Bride, 1940), Juan Miró (The Dutch Interior, 1928), Constantin Brancusi, Giacomo Balla (Abstract Speed + Sound, 1913), Salvador Dalí and Marc Chagall.
Today the museum houses the art collection of Peggy Guggenheim, the most important Italian museum of European and American art of the first half of the 20th century. Here you can admire Cubist, Abstract and Surrealist masterpieces, from Picasso, De Chirico, Kandinskij to Magritte and Duchamp from Jackson Pollock to the artists of the postwar period.
Besides the permanent collection, the museums houses a selection of 26 masterpieces from the world-renowned Gianni Mattioli Collection of early 20th-century Italian art, and the Patsy R. and Raymond D. Nasher Sculpture Garden.
The Guggenheim Foundation also organizes temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
