Il Cimitero Ebraico del Lido è uno dei più antichi al mondo e costituisce una delle prime testimonianze della comunità ebraica veneziana. Fu istituito per concessione della Repubblica di Venezia nel 1389, in seguito a una disputa con i frati del vicino monastero di San Nicolò, che reclamavano la proprietà del terreno. Fu utilizzato e ampliato fino al 1641, ma poi cadde in disuso, fino alla sua riqualificazione nel 1999.
Insieme alle lapidi di epoca medievale, ne sono state rinvenute e catalogate più di mille databili tra il 1550 e il primo '700. La suggestione di questo luogo ha ispirato profondamente numerosi poeti e letterati del Romanticismo, tra i quali Lord Byron e Goethe.
