It is a very old church (9th century) located in one of the few tree-lined in the heart of Venice, San Giacomo dall'Orio has different architectural styles. It was rebuilt in the 13th century, Latin cross with three naves and transept and it was later restructured in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The re-building of the church in 1225 consisted in a Byzantine structure, such as the fine green marble column with Ionic capital praised by John Ruskin and Gabriele d'Annunzio.
Its interior was decorated with a beautiful Gothic “keel” ceiling in the beginning of the 15th century and with later century’s wooden claddings along the central nave.

The church also treasures a number of Renaissance Venetian masterpiece paintings such as Lorenzo Lotto's main altarpiece "Virgin Mary and Child with Apostles and Saints" (1546), which is one of the few works by the artist that can still be found in Venice.

In the old sacristies, there are some of Jacopo Palma il Giovane's best work, including the altarpiece with "Father da Ponte" (1580-81); and the paneled ceiling decorated by Paolo Veronese.
Near the church, the Byzantine-Venetian bell tower of the 12th -13th century.
